I've always played that casters always have a slight tie to any spells
they cast -- and likewise all spells have the "signature" or "scent" of
their caster.

We have always gone under the rule that the caster can always just "snap
his fingers" and stop any spell in which he is the originator or the
channeling agent (cold, abandon, etc). Spells that cause some external,
autonomous force (i.e. vengengeful horror, etc) have to be dispelled
since they would resist their "death".
