Ben'Dar will help with the work of the ship, learning the basics of being a sailor in the process.

If there is any free time, Ben'Dar has several tasks that he will try to work on. He will request help from various members of the party, if they're willing:
1) He needs to learn to speak the Marentian tongue, so he'll try to start learning with whoever's willing to help teach him. Perhaps Caladan could help with this since he and Ben'Dar share their native tongue of Zen'dali? "Caladan, how did you become so fluent in the civilized tongue of the people of Marentia? I would like to learn to speak it also. Will you help me?"
2) Also, I'm sure the dragon skin won't stay good forever without some sort of treatment, so I think some tanning of the dragon hide may be in order during the voyage. Hopefully Z'leyra could help with that and maybe teach Ben'Dar a thing or two about leather working in the process? "Z'leyra, will this dragon hide rot? Should we stretch and dry it? I know very little about treating leather. But I would like to learn and I am a willing student. Will you teach me and together we can work our dragon hide?"

He will also have that future conversation with Z'leyra about bandits, horses, Ticasi, etc.

In the course of getting to know the various members of the group, Ben'Dar will tell his new friends more about his background and history as a common warrior of the central plains of Zen'da and try to become good friends with the various members of the party during the voyage.

Also, when everyone else is busy and he has a few quiet moments alone, he will pull out his dragon fangs and claws and carefully clean and polish them. He will bore holes in the base (hopefully there is a sharp awl in the leather toolkit he salvaged or something?) and thread a strong, tightly braided leather thong through them to create a fearsome-looking necklace.

Regarding investigation of the magic pike... If someone else wants to practice their magic skills and investigate it, that's fine. Ben'Dar is content to "test it out" by simply sticking it into the gut of the next monster that he meets and see what happens. :-)
