The rule says any weapon.  All of the modifiers for MA are physical.

Personally I would use the skill sparingly, only allowing it to be used in characters from areas that might originate it (such as far east), but also then having locals treating the character an outsider…barely being civil, maybe not allowing him in their shops, or even fighting him.  Also, I would not allow the MA character to use 'training' to improve the skill, but only by using the skill in combat.  A MA character in the west or south wouldn’t find anybody that could teach him.
