One thing to consider is that many of the two-handed weapons are not used like a two-handed sword, but as a thrusting weapon.  Even a glaive type weapon.

Perhaps the longer weapons, including spear, could hold off the enemy and prevent or spoil their attack...or provide a negative modifier to the sword and buckler guys.  This would probably match more closely what I have studied.
