Just puttering around with my "quickie" P&P mind experiments. In this
episode we toss the percentile die in favor of a d20 and a few d6's. Come
watch the carnage! :}

First off, the combat table, run through excel via simplification formulas
and "weenie-ized" for a d20:

CV	D S	N	Sh
-20	-2 or less	-1	0	1-2
-19	-2 or less	-1	0	1-2
-18	-2 or less	-1	0-1	2-3

9	0 or less	1-3	4-8	9-13
10	1 or less	2-4	5-9	10-14
11	1 or less	2-4	5-9	10-14
12	1 or less	2-4	5-9	10-14
13	1 or less	2-4	5-9	10-14

19	1 or less	2-4	5-10	11-16
20	1 or less	2-4	5-10	11-16

CV is figured normally. What we add here is the idea of "push", for both
offense and defense.

"Push" is basically figured as 1 die for every 5 points of EL. Characters
may, at the beginning of the phase, declare any dice of "push" towards
offense or defense. Shield "push" may combine with a weapon used
defensively (and horesmanship, if so needed).

On the attack roll, each side will also determine their "push". for every 5
EL of push, you score a "movement" if you roll a 5 or less on a d6. For
fractionals, you score a movement if you roll less or equal to the fraction.
For quick resolution, "fractional" dice should be smaller or a different
color.

Example: Joe the Barbarian has a sword EL of 7. If he went full offensive,
he could roll 2 dice. The first die counts if he rolls a 5 or less, the
second counts if he rolls a 2 or less.

So, on to the attack. Joe the barbarian rolls his d20 attack and 2 dice of
push. His opponent rolls 1 dice of shield push at the same time.

So how is "push" resolved? Easy...for each point of movement for the
attacker, subtract 1 form the d20 ("push in"). With regards to the
defender, each point of movement adds to the d20 roll ("push out").

Situational modifiers are obviously tweaked (flank attack is an automatic
-1, back strike -3, etc).

Optionally, you can add some tactics into this...any push dice can only be
used once per phase. So a player character set upon by 3 nasties may well
have 3-4 dice of push to allocate (shield and weapon defensive). He might
blow all 4 on one (the leader) and take his chances with the others, or use
2 on the big guy and 1 each on the small fry.

Other tweaks can be made...for fencing (dirilar), the special foils may
grant 2x the number of defensive push when used against each other. This
will prompt a lot or shield hist (parry) or misses. The defensive bonus
does not apply vs non-dueling weapons.
