Never actually had to deal with it.
Thinking about it I suspect that there is a simple playable solution (da
mana's gone man!) and a more complex realistic solution that would slow
play. (You can recover some or even all of the mana at half the casting
speed if you take the time AND make the skill/will roll. Note: you can
fumble/abysmal on this roll as well.)
MEL, EL and W should all affect the roll.
Actually some spells you 'gather' the energy to use all at once. Other
spells are a continued spending until the effect happens in the size
desired.
Personally I think I'd GM the simple way.
