This is something i do as well.

Done that trick as well.  Heck we were all into the dungeon period
I'm sure at one time or another.  I've not visited a 'dungeon' though
for quite some time in most of my games :)

Masking can be done through mis use of other senses  as well..
smells...smoke..sounds.. :)  Some tricks i've done

        Trying to think I don't think I've had but one fanatic type character
or player.  So we never come across such a situation I don't recall
(it was late '80s).  But this is how I would deal with it as well after all
humans perception of another person is what makes us human :)
